Gustav Mahler: Songs and Symphonies of Life and Death: Mitchell
Daniel Shao. , My favorite composers are Mahler, Alban Berg, and Schubert. The fourth movement may be Mahler’s most famous composition and is the most frequently performed of his works. The British premiere of the Fifth Symphony came thirty-six years after that of the Adagietto, conducted by Henry Wood at a Proms concert in 1909. The Adagietto was meant as a love song to Mahler's wife, Alma, but few of his compositions share that spirit. Mahler was a firm believer that in order to truly appreciate life, one has to suffer its worst aspects. Still, his rather dim view of life has produced some incredible music.
